Alcohol Free Christmas Drink Recipes

Mulled wine and mince pie parties are a staple part of Christmas celebrations among friends and families, but daytime drinking can leave you feeling drowsy and lethargic as well as unsafe to drive home. If you want to avoid binge drinking, alternate your alcoholic beverages with these delicious alcohol free festive drinks to stay hydrated, or go completely alcohol free for a great party, without the hangover.

Alcohol Free or Low Alcohol Mulled Wine

Mulled wine, the quintessential Christmas drink, is normally alcoholic as it contains red wine and sometimes even brandy, but it needn’t be. If you have a stockist of non alcoholic or low alcohol content red wine near you, or have enough time to buy online, this can be a great way to emulate the taste without the potentially negative effects of binge drinking. If you can’t find non/low alcohol wine, don’t worry, just use cranberry or red grape juice instead.

Ingredients:
375ml low alcohol wine, non alcoholic wine, cranberry juice or red grape juice
375ml orange juice
1 large orange, halved and sliced
1 cinnamon stick
½ tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground ginger

Method:
Put everything into a pan and heat on the hob for 5 to 10 minutes until liquid is hot, but not boiling. Then turn the hob off and cover pan with a lid until ready to serve. Ladle into glasses and decorate with a few pieces of orange and a cinnamon stick in each glass.

Alcohol Free Warm Spiced Apple

Normally a drink made with cider, but there’s no reason why the alcohol free version made with apple juice, shouldn’t be equally delicious. The trick here is to buy good quality, fresh apple juice, not the made from concentrate stuff you normally find in supermarket’s own brand ranges.

Ingredients:
700ml apple juice
200ml water
100g brown sugar
½ a lemon, sliced
½ orange, sliced
1 cinnamon stick
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Method:
Put everything into a pan and heat on the hob for 5 to 10 minutes until liquid is hot, but not boiling. Turn off the hob, strain liquid into a new pan and place back on the hob to keep warm from the residual heat. Cover with a lid until ready to serve. Ladle into glasses and decorate with a few pieces of orange or lemon.

Alcohol Free Eggnog

Another traditional Christmas drink, though now more popular in America than the UK. Eggnog is an egg based drink, which is more delicious than it sounds, which can be made with or without alcohol.

Ingredients:
3 large eggs, plus 1 yolk
475ml whole milk
60ml double cream
A pinch of nutmeg
A pinch of salt
½ tablespoon vanilla extract

Method:
Whisk together eggs, egg yolk, sugar and salt. Then add milk slowly, whisking the whole time until the mixture is a smooth, even consistency.
Add the mixture to a pan and heat on the lowest hob setting until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. This may take 45 minutes to an hour, but don’t be tempted to turn up the heat – this will cause the eggs to scramble.
Strain the mixture into a jug or bowl and stir in the vanilla extract and nutmeg. Then cover and refrigerate until chilled – this will take around four hours.
When the mixture is cool, whip the double cream until it makes soft peaks, and then fold in to the chilled mixture.

Virgin Mary

As Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth, what could be a more topical drink than the Virgin Mary, the Bloody Mary’s alcohol free cousin. Easy to make, but also great to order if you’re out and about, as most bars will stock the ingredients for this and can easily make it without alcohol.

Ingredients:
1,200ml tomato juice
Tabasco sauce to taste
Worcestershire sauce to taste
The juice of a lemon
A pinch of salt and pepper
A celery stick per glass, to garnish

Method:
Pour tomato juice into a jug and add lemon juice. Then season with Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to taste. Stir well and serve over ice with a stick of celery to garnish.

Homemade Detox Drink Recipes For Cleansing

Homemade detox drink recipes are available for many of the favoured detox plans. Before you start any detox diet plan you should always consult your doctor. Once you have the green light you should then think about what sort of detox plan suits you best.

Detox plans can vary vastly. Some restrict you to only drinking a special formula up to 6 times a day where as others allow you to eat as much as you want as long as you eat healthy unprocessed foods. Many make the mistake of making their first detox experience a fluid only diet. Fluid only diet are renowned to be very hard to complete and are not recommended for those new to the world of detoxification.

Many also make the mistake of switching directly from their normal diet to a detox diet. It is advisable to wind down from your normal diet over a period of a few weeks gradually reducing junk foods and caffeine etc before you start your detox diet.

Many of those who do partake in detoxification do have withdrawal symptoms. These can include, feeling light headed, feeling week and in some cases nausea. Most symptoms do though pass after a couple of days.  One of the hardest detox diets to complete is the Lemon Detox Diet.

There is no need to pay a fortune for the Lemon Detox Diet drink as you can make it yourself in a minute or so for a fraction of what it would cost you to buy in off the shelf. Just follow the instructions below.

Take a drinking glass and add 4oz of cold water

Add lemon juice from half of a freshly squeezed Lemon.

Add 2 tablespoons of Pure Maple Syrup.

Add a dash of Cayenne Pepper or ground ginger.

Using a spoon stir well.

Add  4 oz of cold water then stir again.

The detox process is meant to be followed for between 3 – 7 days.
It is recommended you have a multi-vitamin or mega multi-vitamin each day.

5 Microwave Egg Recipes

Being a student means you have very little time or money to spend on your food. Heres five simple egg recipes that you can do in your microwave oven. Using your microwave will not only save you time but also use less energy and can provide you with some great nutritious meals.Eggs are simple and easy to cook, they have great nutritional value and will help retain you through those long evenings of study. Because they are full of protein they are a great source for athletes to help build up muscle.

1; Scrambled eggs; This is probably the easiest thing to cook in a microwave.

Take one egg and crack it into a microwave safe container. Add about a tablespoon of water or milk and whisk the two together and put them in your microwave oven. Cook on full power for 50 seconds or 1/2 power for 1and a half minutes. Remove from your microwave and stir with a fork. Leave this to stand for two minutes and in less than five minutes you will have light fluffy scrambled eggs.

2; Breakfast English Muffin;

Take a microwave cup and melt some butter in it for about 15 seconds. Swish the butter around the cup [ this helps to stop the egg from sticking to the cup ] crack an egg into the cup and microwave on full power for 45 seconds. Be careful though to check the power of your microwave and adjust your cooking time appropriately as the egg may explode. Cook some bacon on a microwave griddle until your happy that its cooked right for you. Butter an English muffin add the bacon, a slice of cheese and the egg and blast on full power your microwave for another 15 seconds. You have a great breakfast muffin in little time that will keep you going through the morning.

3; Garlic cod with eggs;

Take a small piece of cod, between two and four ounces and place it in a microwave safe dish and add a clove of chopped garlic. Cover this with a microwave cover or microwave safe wrap. Cook on full power for about a minute. Whisk two or three eggs together and pour them over the fish cook on full power for a further two minutes. Take out of the microwave and leave to stand for two minutes. This makes a great filling and healthy meal for you to enjoy and will impress your friends.

4; Fridge omelette;

Take all those left over bits of veg,ham,bacon and any other left overs in your fridge. Put them in a microwave dish and add two or three eggs and cook on full power for one and a half minutes. This should use up your left overs ad give you a tasty fun snack.

5; Meringue with mars bar sauce.

Take two egg whites and add sugar or a sweetener, whisk the two together until the mixture turns into white peaks. Butter a microwave dish and spoon in three or four blobs of of the mixture. Microwave on full power until it puffs up. Take out of the microwave and leave to finish cooking through. Chop up a mars bar and put it in a microwave safe bowl. Cook on full power until it melts. Pour the sticky mess over the puffed up meringues and consume rapidly. Be careful as the melted mars will be very hot.

These recipes are all easy and quick to prepare and are great value. Ideal for students and people on tight budgets. You can use any microwave to cook them in.

Rhubarb Baking Recipes

Rhubarb was always a staple in our garden when I was growing up. We always had it in lots of different dessert recipes over the summer. Here are few tasty rhubarb recipes for you to enjoy.

Rhubarb Muffins

1 1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup oil
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup walnuts
1 1/2 cups rhubarb, diced

Topping:
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

In a large bowl, mix together the egg, sugar, oil, vanilla, buttermilk, flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Add in the walnuts and the rhubarb and mix together well. Line a muffin pan with paper liners. Pour mixture into the muffin liners. In a small bowl, mix together the topping ingredients. Add the topping to each muffin. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes.

Rhubarb Pie

3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sour cream
2 cups rhubarb, finely cut

Topping:
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup butter

In a large bowl, beat together the sugar, flour, and eggs. Add the vanilla and sour cream into the mixture. Put the rhubarb in and mix until thoroughly blended together. Pour the mixture into an unbaked 9-inch pie shell. In a small bowl, combine the topping ingredients. Mix together until the mixture is crumbly. Do not put the topping mixture on the pie right away. Bake the pie in a 400 degree oven for 25 minutes or when the center of the pie is firm. During the last 10 minutes of the baking time, sprinkle the topping mixture over the pie.

Rhubarb Upside-Down Cake

1 package yellow cake mix
4 cups rhubarb, diced
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 pint whipping cream

Prepare the cake mix as directed. Pour the mixture into a 9 x 13-inch greased pan. In a medium bowl, mix the rhubarb and sugar together. Evenly sprinkle the rhubarb mixture over the batter. Pour the whipping cream over the entire mixture. (It will look very runny.) Bake in a 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until the cake tests done.

Zucchini Baking Recipes

Looking for a way to use up all of that extra zucchini in your garden? Here are a couple of tasty baking recipes for zucchini.

It always seems like if you plant even one zucchini plant, you have enough zucchini to feed a very large family plus the neighbors. So, of course, there is then the question of what to do with all of that zucchini. It always amazes me that zucchini can taste so good in baked goods. Hope you enjoy these two baking recipes for zucchini!

Zucchini Granola Cookies
3/4 cup butter or margarine (softened)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
grated rind of 1 orange
3 cups grated, unpeeled zucchini
3 to 3 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup butterscotch or chocolate chips
3 cups granola cereal

In a large bowl, mix together the butter and sugar. Mix in the egg, vanilla, orange rind, and zucchini. Add in the flour and baking soda. Mix in the granola cereal. Then mix in the butterscotch or chocolate chips. Grease a cookie sheet and put teaspoonfuls of the dough onto the sheet. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

Chocolate Zucchini Bread
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup oil
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup buttermilk
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
5 tablespoons cocoa
2 1/2 cups grated zucchini
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

In a large bowl, mix the sugars, oil, and margarine together. Add the egg into the mixture one at a time. Mix in the buttermilk and vanilla. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and cocoa. Add in the zucchini and dry mixture by alternating. Add in the chocolate chips, raisins, and nuts. Grease a 9x13-inch pan and pour the batter into it. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.

I've Uncovered The Secret To The Most Bizarre Baking Recipes That'll Reveal How You Can Bake The Best Home-Made Bread Ever.

Yesterday, I've discovered a great baking recipe from one of my most-used cook books on bread baking and right away I've gone into the kitchen to begin my baking journey. Also try to keep an eye on sugary, fatty or salty food. You do not have to avoid them, moderation is always the key. Try this: mix some tuna, celery, fat free mayonnaise and some shredded cheese for a fat free tuna spread you can put on a piece of whole wheat bread. The easiest tuna sandwich you will ever make, and possibly the tastiest. So, no more greasy fast food and feeling too full and tired all afternoon, because you had a lunch on the heavy side.

Now you get to dinner, and things get even more complicated. Most of you have families, and you need to please them as well. So why not try your hand at a stir fry. It contains all the ingredients you should have in a healthy meal, and you are always free to substitute the meat for fish or veggie meat if you are a vegetarian. Here is a super quick and simple dinner idea for a quick beef stir fry: 1 lb of chicken breasts in strips, 2 cups of your favorite veggies, 1/4 cup of light Italian dressing and 1 teaspoon of light soy sauce. Fry the beef along with the dressing in a hot skillet. Add the vegetables and the soy sauce and fry for an extra 5 minutes. That's it, you're done!

Try to keep an open mind and stay creative when trying some new healthy recipes. Nothing is impossible, and you will slowly but surely get more and more confident in your new found cooking skills. The first of the easy dinner ideas is an old classic, barbecue chicken. It will take less than an hour to make and can feed a large family cheaply. The trick to cooking barbecue chicken is to make sure the outside does not burn while the inside is cooking through. To make sure this is accomplished, put the barbecue coating on after the chicken is cooked thoroughly and let it heat until warm.

To prepare this, preheat the oven to 300 degrees. While you are waiting for the oven to heat, take out a baking dish and add about a teaspoon of oil. You can use olive oil for a healthier option. Add your chicken pieces to the pan and coat with salt and pepper. Put the chicken in the heated oven and cook until white inside and heated to 180 degrees by meat thermometer. Mix one 16 ounce can of orange soda and 16 ounces of barbecue sauce together and coat chicken. Put back into the oven for about ten to fifteen minutes. Remove and enjoy. Add a Side salad and a baked potato or potato salad made with low fat mayonnaise and you have one of the most perfect easy dinner ideas.

One of the kids favorites as well as good eating for adults is tater tot casserole. It is super simple to create and only takes less than an hour from start to finish. It is great because it only requires the use of two pans. A pound or two of ground met such as beef, turkey, chicken, or pork needs to be cooked and browned. While this is cooking, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Take out a large baking dish and begin to cover the bottom with frozen tater tots. Drain the cooked ground meat and begin to add a layer over the tater tots.

If you like onions, you can also cut these and layer them on top of the meat. Add a layer of shredded cheese of your choice. Cover all this with cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup. Continue layering the ingredients until you reach the top. Add a final layer of cheese and cover with foil. Put into the oven until the casserole is heated through. Take off the foil and let sit in the oven for a minute to make it brown. Serve each person and enjoy. It goes great with a fresh salad and a nice large glass of milk.

When the stockings have been filled then emptied and after Santa has made his appointed rounds families around the globe begin the preparations (or in some instances continue them) to prepare the family feast that is most often associated with Christmas Dinner. There are many traditions around the world though sadly far too few families have the opportunity to experience some of the rich traditions and delicious foods that mark the Christmas holidays in other corners of the globe, or even across each individual nation.

In certain parts of Italy, because of the Catholic tradition of abstaining from red meat on Christmas Eve day, there is a tradition of having fish for the evening meal. This is commonly referred to as a 7 fishes dinner and is a fascinating tradition for those who enjoy seafood. It's certainly a new and refreshing dinner idea for many people if you are looking for something a little different from the ordinary. Even if fish really isn't your food of choice there is no rule that says you can't prepare a nice Italian feast for your Christmas dinner. The important thing is that you have friends and family gathered near and prepare the food with love. You do not have to have turkey or ham in order for the meal to qualify as Christmas and there is no reason that you have to stick with traditions that you really do not enjoy.

A traditional German Christmas dinner might be a neat tradition to try in America as well if you are looking to introduce your family to various cultures or just want to do a little something extraordinary for Christmas this year. One thing to note is that many Germans have their Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day. A traditional German Christmas dinner often consists of dishes such as stuffed Christmas Goose, Potato Dumplings, Red Cabbage, and Baked Apples for dessert. Of course you do not have to choose a traditional Christmas dinner for your Christmas German cuisine there are plenty of great German dishes that can be enjoyed if you wish to bring a German theme to your Christmas table. Do whatever tastes good and it might be best to choose foods that are relatively easy to prepare rather than those that are time consuming so that you can enjoy time with friends and family rather than cooped up in the kitchen.

If a taste of the UK is what you have in mind for your Christmas Dinner table then you might find the foods bring a flavor that is a little closer to home than you may realize. Popular Christmas dinner favorites in the UK include dishes such as roasted turkey, roasted potatoes, brussel sprouts, dressing, and pudding pie. One interesting tradition that is popular in the UK is that of Christmas crackers, which hold little gifts and goodies inside.

Another interesting choice for your Christmas table may be to include your favorite Mexican dishes for dinner. Most Americans have a soft spot for Mexican cuisine and it is definitely warming to eat on a cold winter's day. The point is to make your Christmas dinner menu fun to eat, fun to prepare, and something that is likely to make your guests smile while building fond memories of your Christmas day.

The same may be said of most cuisines, even those from cultures that do not traditionally celebrate Christmas. Thai, Indian, Chinese foods make wonderful themes for a Christmas table if you are knowledgeable about the cuisine and willing to undertake the tasks of preparation as part of your Christmas dinner plans. The trick is really in finding dishes that are relatively simple to prepare, difficult to mess up, and can easily be skipped in the event that something does go wrong. There are tons of distractions on Christmas in most households and you do not want Christmas dinner ruined because one dish is proving difficult or impossible or (heaven forbid) gets burned, dropped on the floor, or eaten by the dog.

Camping Out - Easy Dinner Recipes and Dinner Ideas For Family Fun

Whether you have a mega-bus RV, a trailer, camper, or tent, camping is a wonderful way to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors as a family together. It really is a great exercise in family togetherness as you unplug most of life's distractions and focus on creating shelter and food, then enjoying the outdoors together. A few easy dinners recipes and you'll soon be gathered around a roaring fire enjoying each others' company.

I grew up camping with my family regularly. We pulled a camping trailer and loved the convenience to set up camp quickly and carry the basics with us. I still remember nights spent playing cards together and cooking over the grill. We learned to always be ready to leave early, because my father loved to leave the night or day before we planned. He would just get excited and want to go early. Pretty cute, huh?

Now that I have a family of my own I try to make it a memory for us as well. We live in Washington state and the state parks are wonderful. Our favorite, located on the north end of Whidbey Island is Deception Pass State Park. It is lovely with some waterfront spaces, and wonderful facilities. We love to go there. Again I like to prepare in advance the dinner for our first night.

I usually start a flank steak marinating before we leave and by the time we travel, arrive, setup camp and get the fire going, the steaks is marinated and the dinner is wonderful, tender, succulent, flavorful steak. If you have time before hand, it's great to parboil some small potatoes until they are almost done. Then at supper time, roll them in olive oil and salt and pepper and put them on skewers to grill up, deliciously, with crispy, grill marked skin. I usually plan a bagged salad to round out the meal and then go in for a grilled dessert.

Have you ever roasted bananas on the campfire? They're delicious. Wrap them in foil sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnamon. Heat until warmed through and serve with a spoon to be eaten straight from the foil.

For a great camping breakfast, consider packing some crescent rolls and jam. Wrap the rolls around a roasting stick, leaving an opening at the top (we'll fill that with jam later). Let each person toast their roll over the fire until golden brown outside and cooked through. Carefully take it off the stick or eat it off the stick if your brave. Fill the opening at the top with jam or jelly and eat while they're hot.


Campfire Grilled Flank Steak

We always plan this for the first night camping. It is marinating on the way and cooks in a flash once we get the fire going.

Serves 4

Ingredients

2 lb Flank steak
1/4 C Soy sauce
1/4 C Worcestershire sauce
1/4 C Water
2 Tb Rosemary - fresh, minced

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a zip lock bag and marinate overnight or all day. Grill 4 to 5 minutes per side or until desired degree of doneness. Cover and rest 10 minutes, then slice in thin slices across the grain in the bias.


Grilled Rosemary Potatoes

The potatoes are parboiled to give them a head start, then rolled in olive oil, salt and rosemary and finished on the grill. The skins are crispu and delicious.

Serves 4

Ingredients

1 lb Red potatoes - small
2 Tb Olive oil
Sea salt
1 Tb Rosemary - fresh, minced

Instructions

In a large pot of boiling salted water cook the potatoes until just slightly under done. Drain, then drizzle with olive oil, salt and rosemary. Toss to coat. Thread on metal skewers is desired. Grill turning regularly, until crispy and done.

Backyard Camp Out - Easy Dinner Recipes and Dinner Ideas For Family Fun

When the kids are little or time or money is short, try a backyard camp out for an easy recipe for great family fun. All you need are some willing campers, a tent, some bedding and a spirit of adventure.

Step 1) Acquire a tent. Hopefully there's one in the garage and you can find it. If not, you can ask your friends if you can borrow one, or you can go to the local thrift store and see if you can score a bargain. Alternately you can hit the discount stores, tents should be in the sporting goods section and shouldn't cost a lot of money.

Step 2) Gather supplies. We need sleeping bags or bedding and pillows for each camper. We need at least one flashlight and hopefully a battery operated lantern to light our tent. Some cards and games might be fun too.

Step 3) Find a flat and dry area of your yard and pitch your tent. This can be the funniest part of this whole procedure. Generally, modern tents come with folded stakes that unfold and stamp into each other. These poles are threaded into channels sown on the outside of the tent, then the ends are held in place in the ground with stakes. There is usually a rain shield that covers the whole assembly in case of, you guessed it, rain. If your tent is older, you're on your own for assembly.

Step 4) Food and drink are critical to the success of this mission. Plan to cook your meal outside. See the easy recipe ideas below.

Step 5) Light the grill or BBQ fire and play some games with the kids. Lawn darts, the non-lethal kind are good, as is frisbee.

Step 6) Cook dinner and eat. Plan some dessert too. Roast marshmallows over the fire or grill some peaches and drizzle with maple syrup then top with ice cream.

Step 7) Play games with the kids after dinner. Tell stories. When it gets dark, tell scary stories passing around the flashlight. Fortunately, if it get's too scary, the house is nearby.

Step 8) This is the hard part, get comfortable, go to sleep and stay our in the tent until morning. Take the flashlight if you need to make an indoor privy visit. And the good news about backyard camping is that if it gets too uncomfortable, you can always go inside and go to bed. The best part is the time together, not the snoring in the tent part.

Smoked Cheddar Stuffed Hamburgers

A different kind of burger that everyone will enjoy.

Serves 4

Ingredients

1 lb Ground beef
1/2 Tb Garlic and herb seasoning - salt free
4 ea Smoked Cheddar Cheese , cut into 4 1 inch chunks
1 Tb Olive oil
4 ea Hamburger buns

Instructions

In a large bowl combine the beef and garlic seasoning until mixed. Shape into four patties about 1 inch thick. Press a chunk of cheese into the center of each of the patties, make sure it is well covered with meat. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high heat, or prepare outside grill. Cook the burgers on the skillet or grill about 4 to 6 minutes per side for medium to medium well done. Serve on buns.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes and Scallions

Great on the grill beside your favorite grilled dish!

Serves 4

Ingredients

3 C Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut lengthwise into 1/2 inch thick slices
3 Tb Olive oil
1 Tsp Thyme, dried
1/4 Tsp Cayenne
2 Tb Butter
2 Scallions, thinly sliced
Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Heat grill to medium. Toss sweet potatoes with oil, thyme, and cayenne pepper in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

Grill potatoes until tender, 20 to 30 minutes, turning frequently. Re-add potatoes to the bowl. Add butter, and break potatoes into large pieces with a fork. Toss with scallions. Serve.

Grilled Corn

Let your kids shuck the corn. Mine love to!

Serves 4

Ingredients

4 ea Cob of corn, shucked
Butter, melted (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Start the grill, then shuck the corn. Grill corn, turning occasionally. When some kernels are a bit charred, 5 to 15 minutes, corn is done. Brush on melted butter. Season with salt and pepper. Serve.

Picnic at the Beach - Easy Dinner Recipes and Dinner Ideas For Family Fun

What could be better than a picnic at the beach for a family dinner outing? Sand in your toes, the roar of the ocean a walk on the beach, and a roaring fire to gather around. If you aren't lucky enough to live near the ocean, a lake, pond, creek or fountain will do. Or simply put blankets down in the back yard. A few easy dinner recipes for a picnic at the beach then later when it gets dark you can do some star gazing.

What you need:

1) A place to go. Choose a local beach, preferably with fire pits or BBQs. One with a bit of shelter from the wind is ideal. It will keep the sand out of your food later.

2) Fire - a fire ring, BBQ, or create your own. You can bring a small portable BBQ or dig a pit and line it with stones. If you are making your own fire pit it is great to involve the whole faily in the digging, the hunt for stones and the search for firewood. It is a good idea to bring a grill to set on top of stones on your firepit. And i always bring some backup firewood in case the search for wood turns up less than an adequate supply.

3) Seating - a picnic bench, folding chairs or a huge old quilt or blanket are wonderful to sit on fireside. Bring several so as the day gets cooler you can all be near the fire and you can switch side s as the wind direction changes to avoid getting smoke on your eyes.

4) Games - It is a great idea to bring some games or toys to occupy the troops until dinner time. A bucket and shovel are classic beach toys and the basis of any good sand castle. It's really amazing how the sand itself is entertaining for kids to play with. It's like at Christmas when all the little kids love to play in the boxes and wrapping; take them to the beach and they love the sand. Of course later they'll have it in every crevice, but that's a price well worth paying for a good afternoon at the beach. Beach balls are another good choice as are Frisbees. Bring another bucket if you've got a shell collector. They'll spend hours combing the beach for treasures. You can make a game of collecting sea shells and sea glass and have a craft day later where you turn your treasures into a craft such as decorated picture frames.

5) Camera - Since we may be making some decorated picture frames later with our collected shells, we may as well bring the camera and capture some sun and sand logged goofiness on film. I love a shot from the end of the day when everyone ir pink and sandy, tired and happy.

6) Safety - Be sure to have the safety discussion with kids early on. Depending on how many you have with you and what their ages are, there rules may vary, but each child should clearly know whether they are allowed in the water, and if so how deep. (To the knees? To the Belly button?) And if we are wandering the beach looking for shells, lets choose marker to show how far it is safe to go and whether you need to have someone come with you.

7) Drying off - Bring loads of towels, preferably big beach towels. Bring more than you think you'll need because someone always gets cold and wet when it is later in the day and beginning to get chilly.

8) Warm clothes - be sure to bring jackets for every one. Once the day turns cooler it is easy to get chilled. Bring something soft in case we're gotten any sunburn.

9) Sunscreen - I hate to have to cut a great outing short becasue we didn't plan well enough for sun exposure. Be sure it is water proof, plentiful and it is reapplied as needed.

10) Drinks! Be sure to have plenty of bottles of water on hand and well as fruit drinks for the kids and whatever the adults would like. Why not go with a beach theme and have some mai tais on the beach. They needn't even be alcoholic to taste good, although a little rum add good flaover. Buy mai tai mix, orange juice, mango juice, pineapple juice and rum if desired and go to town. It's extra point if you bring cute glasses (non breakable of course) and super extra credit for those little umbrellas.

11) Food! I bet you thought we never get there, but you know the food is the highlight of the day. Today we're doing shrimp boil in foil; succulent tender shrimp, sweet summer corn and spicy sausage all grilled together in a foil packet. The are make ahead and kept in the cooler to pop on the fire when we're ready. Also bring a loaf or garlic bread, all buttered and sliced and wrapped in foil to warm on the grill. For appetizers I like to do little smokey sausage links. Give everyone a weiner roasting stick or fashion them yourselves from coat hangers, spear a little smoky sausage and heat over the fire until sizzling. Careful though, they're hot! Bring more than you think you'll need because appetites get big with all that sun and activity. I'm convinced it makes the food taste better too! For dessert, it's got to be s'mores. Bring marshmallows, roasting sticks, chocolate bars and graham crackers. Again bring more than you think you need to account marshmallows dropped in the sand, burnt like torches and hearty appetites!

Grilled Shrimp "Boil" in Foil

A shrimp boil is a traditional southern dish where shrimp, shellfish, sausage and corn are boiled together with Old Bay seasoning. This has all the good flavor, but is faster and easier to prepare in foil packets.

Serves 4

1 1/2 lb Shrimp - medium - peeled and deveined
1 lb Mussels
1 lb Clams
1/2 lb Kielbasa, sliced
2 Cobs of of corn, shucked
2 Tb Butter
1/4 C Water
1/4 C White wine
1 Tsp Old Bay seasoning

Instructions

Preheat grill to medium high heat. Cut the corn into 1 inch rounds. Tear off 4 large sheets of foil and fold in half to double. Divide seafood, corn and sausage evenly among the packets, dot with butter, sprinkle on Old Bay, and 1 TB of both wine and water. Fold up with double folds to secure well. Grill packets about 10 minutes turning once until puffed. Empty each packet carefully into a bowl to serve.

Throw a Block Party - Easy Dinner Recipes and Dinner Ideas For Family Fun

Block parties are a phenomenal way to celebrate summer with family and friends. With the rising cost of gas and travel many people are staying home for vacations ("staycations") and throwing a block party is a great way to get together and celebrate without traveling way. We have some easy dinner recipes to help create your feast and some ideas to make it happen.

1) Get everyone involved early. Notify people in advance of the event by putting save the date invitations in their mailboxes, then follow up in person so they know they are welcome.

2) Divvy up the tasks to make life easier. Have every family bring their own meat to grill, and assign most people to bring a dish to share. Those not bringing a dish can bring buns, condiments, desserts, ice and beverages. Get a headcount early so people know how much to bring.

3) Ask everyone to bring their own plates so there isn't a huge amount of waste at the end of the party and you can be green.

4) Put out sunscreen and bug spray to keep burns and pesky bugs at bay.

5) Assign someone to bring tables and folding chairs, but suggest to guests that they bring lawn chairs too.

6) Stock up on disposable cups.

7) Bring squirt guns, frisbees, balls, hula hoops and other games for the kids to all share.

8) Bring a CD player and some music to set the mood.

9) Have a watermelon eating contest and give out amazing prizes.

10) After dark you can project a movie against the side of someones house and all gather around to watch. Make popcorn to share.

11) Think about making homemade ice cream. Nothing puts people in a better mood faster. The young ones may have never seen it made and the older ones can share great memories of homemade ice cream from their youth.

12) Assign, or hire some teens to help out with the young ones. Make sure no one gets trampled and everyone has a good time.

Some easy dinner recipes to add to your party:

New Oreleans Flank Steak

This recipe multiplies easily to fit a crowd!

Serves 4

Ingredients

2 Tb Red wine vinegar
2 Tsp Light brown sugar
2 Tsp Creole or Cajun Seasoning
2 Tsp Terriyaki Sauce - reduced sodium
1 Tsp Oregano - dried
1/4 Tsp Salt
1/4 Tsp Cracked black pepper
1 1/4 lb Flank steak

Instructions

In a large zip top plastic bag, combine all the ingredients except the steak. Seal the bag to shake to combine the ingredients well. Add the flank steak, seal and shake bag again to coat steak well with marinade.

Refrigerate up to 3 days.

Preheat broiler, or grill, and grill the steak for 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium or cook to your desired doneness. Let the steak stand 10 minutes before slicing crosswise into 1/2 inch thick slices.

Honey Mustard Chicken

Simple but delicious. Kids will enjoy it a lot. Use broiler if grill is not available.

Serves 6

Ingredients

5 Tb Honey
5 Tb Dijon mustard
4 1/2 lb Chicken thighs and drumsticks

Instructions

Mix honey and mustard together in a small bowl. Put chicken in resealable plastic bag or plastic dish with lid, and pour or brush marinade over chicken. Make sure chicken is covered with marinade. Marinate in refrigerator for at least one hour, but not more than 24 hours. It's best to marinate overnight.

Grill the chicken on a preheated grill for about 8 to 9 minutes per side, baste chicken with marinade until chicken is cooked through and lightly browned. Serve chicken warm or cold.

Chipotle Mashed Potatoes

Chipotle chilies, lime, and cilantro transform everyday mashed potatoes into a mouth watering experience. Prep time is 2 minutes, and cook time is 8 minutes.

Serves 4

Ingredients

1 C Milk
2 3/4 C Mashed potatoes - frozen
1 Can Chipotles en adobo, minced
1/4 C Cilantro, chopped
1 Tb Lime juice - fresh
1/4 Tsp Salt
1/4 Tsp Black pepper, freshly ground

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, heat milk over medium heat. Add frozen potatoes; cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until throughly heated. Remove from heat; add chilies and the rest of the ingredients. Stir until well combined.

Easy Three Bean Salad

Great accompaniment to any meal. Will stay in the refrigerator for up to one week in a tight lidded container.

Serves 8

Ingredients

1 Can Kidney beans - 15 oz, rinsed and drained
1 Can Black beans - 15 oz, drained and rinsed
1 Can Chickpeas - 15 oz, drained and rinsed
1/2 C Parsley - fresh, chopped
1/4 C Olive oil
1/4 C Balsamic vinegar

Instructions

Combine all ingredients and toss. Cover and chill.
